Compare advertising, affiliate partnerships, sponsorships, and paid products with a practical decision framework.
Start with value, then pick the model
A publication can earn in several ways, but each model places different demands on the work. Display advertising depends on a useful site and an audience; sponsorship needs a defined offer; affiliate relationships fit selective recommendations; subscriptions require recurring value readers want to pay for. None replaces an editorial purpose.
Display ads: low friction for free readers, but revenue depends on traffic and advertiser demand. Affiliate links: useful for relevant recommendations, but commissions can bias coverage. Sponsorship: a fit for a focused audience, with clear labeling and sales work. Subscriptions: direct reader support and an ongoing delivery obligation.
Prepare an advertising-safe experience
Put substantive original content and navigation first. Keep ads visually distinct from links, buttons, and article text. Avoid layouts that invite accidental clicks or overwhelm the material people came to read. Review current AdSense program policies before adding ad code. Acceptance is determined by the advertising platform, not by a checklist alone.
If using ads.txt, publish the seller record supplied by your advertising account at the root of the domain. A privacy page should explain advertising technologies actually in use and link to relevant choices. Consent requirements vary by reader location and configuration.
Make affiliate recommendations useful
Choose a product or service when it helps with a real reader decision. Explain the use case, tradeoffs, who it suits, and who may prefer another option. Record the date and basis of any comparison. Do not describe untested personal experience as a hands-on review.
Disclose a commission relationship near the recommendation, before a commercial link. A footer disclosure alone is easy to miss. The FTC endorsement guidance discusses clear disclosure of material relationships.
Use an editorial scorecard
For a software comparison, define criteria before choosing winners: target user, essential features, setup effort, current pricing, accessibility, support, and limitations. Separate what you verified directly from what a provider says. Recheck changing details before publication and after major updates.
